I have to admit that even though the weather is chilly, I am itching to get outside and start planting my garden!
Farmers nearby have already started tilling, and so, I too, am getting ready to prep our little ‘field!’
I’ve already gathered my tools, so once the wind dies down, I can get outside and till my little raised bed garden!
Today however, because of strong winds, I am tucked safely underneath the covers inside our little homestead on wheels!
Nevertheless, I am still working!
However today, I’m making a list of all the cold weather crops I can start planting, and figuring out where I will plant them!
Although we do have a longer growing season than we’re used to, we still have to watch the weather forecast to see when we can start planting!
Currently, our weather dictates that we’ll have a number of nights with temps in the 20s, therefore, Mom and I are holding off planting until the middle of the month.
This, I’m hoping will get us past any severe frosts, plus it’ll give me a chance to purchase a frost sheet to protect our garden!
Our first planting will be cool weather crops from seed…
Yes, we could’ve started seedlings indoors, but since we have three curious and potentially destructive felines in our little homestead on wheels, we have no other option!
Okay, yes, we could buy starter plants from the local garden center or nursery, but we’re stubborn! 😉
The following is our current list:
Must haves: carrots, cilantro, bulb onions, green onions, parsley, spinach and bush peas.
Space permitting: arugula, leek, leaf lettuce, parsnips, radishes, rutabaga and turnips.
Unfortunately, we only have twelve 1-foot squares for planting… which do think we should omit and why? Let me know in the comments!
Until next time,
Peace, love and safe travels!
